I had a wee Mother's Day promotion I ran through Facebook, and invited all the mummas out there to tell me what they liked doing best with their family. I had so many wonderful entries, and it really was all the little things that shone through - snuggles/giggles/crafting/beach walks... the list was beautiful. I used a random selection application to choose a winner, and the Allan family it was! Their favourite thing was doing crafts and drawing with their two little girls. So I sat and watched them for a very quick mini doco session and caught some beautiful moments.
Riley was my last newborn baby I photographed before my baby girl was due to arrive. I had an overwhelming sense of feeling surreal while I was there as I knew that I would be holding my own new girl any day. In contrast to my own household though, it was peaceful and quiet. Mum and Dad were full of calm and pride. It felt like there was all the time in the world to soak in the newness of family life and all the love.
This has fast become one of my favourite sessions. I love lifestyle photography. It's these kind of real photos that draw me in. But it's hard to just let things go and to NOT set up group poses. So while I threw in a few suggestions, I mostly let this family lead the way. And there was no way they were staying out of the water, so half the session they were just playing in the water. And climbing the trees. And jumping off the branches. And building sandcastles. And the necessary morning KeepCup coffee for mum and dad (and fluffies for the boys).
